

When you join Medicare, you generally choose between two paths: Original Medicare with a supplemental (Medigap) plan or a Medicare Advantage (Part C) plan.
The Original Medicare Path: This option gives you the freedom to see any doctor in the U.S. that accepts Medicare. However, you are responsible for monthly premiums for Part B, and if you choose a standalone drug plan, a premium for Part D as well. Because Original Medicare doesn't cover everything, many Florida residents also add a Medigap policy to help pay for out-of-pocket costs like the 20% coinsurance.
The Medicare Advantage Path: These plans are offered by private companies and bundle your hospital, medical, and drug coverage into one plan. Many people in the North Port/Port Charlotte area choose Advantage because they often include additional services not found in Original Medicare, such as dental, vision, and hearing. While the overall premiums are typically lower, these plans can come with higher out-of-pocket costs for certain services until you reach your plan's annual limit.
